I have one spool laoded with 10 lb. flourocarbon for open water applications, and one spool with 6 lb. Trilene XT mono for fishing in cover. I've had great success with both. I hope that helps.

That could depend on the type of fishing that you plan to do. I recommend what has worked the best for me for an all around outfit to meet almost every fishing situation for over 30 years fishing in the North, South, Midwest and Northwest. I have more recently updated to the newest versions of this equipment for both me and my wife.

I guide some and teach people to fish. When they ask me what I would recommend for one all around outfit then this is what I recommend. They get it and they stay with this same equipment because it works so well for them just as it always has for me.

The Shakespeare Ugly Stik, Medium, 7 foot for 6 - 15 pound line. Match this with a 35 or 40 size spinning reel. I am currently using the Mitchell Avocet II size 4000 (40) spinning reel. Load this reel with Stren Magnathin 10 pound test line. You would probably want the walleye or lo vis green color. If you fish clear water use clear line. Second choice of line would be Trilene XL in the 10 pound size. They are strong thinner lines. If you are after the up feeding fish like crappie or trout then a blue line might be the best in other than crystal clear water.

If it is your preference, the Ugly Stik Lady or Lite versions that meet the same specs will also work just fine. This combination will give you a rod with the fast or limber action that will work well for all types of fishing. It is limber enough to be a trolling rod, long and sensitive enough to be a casting or jigging rod. It works well for Bass, Panfish, Walleye, trout and everything else.

The thinner 10 pound line works well for crappie or trout and is strong enough for walleye and bass. If you want to go after the much larger catfish or the northern pike then have your spare spool loaded with 14 or 15 pound Stren Original and the rest of the equipment can handle it. I stay with the 10 pound line for all of it except salt water fishing.

I have trolling gear, casting gear and other spinning combination's. I have outfits designed for and using the super braided lines. This Ugly Stik combination that I just described is the one the catches fish for me and I have landed fish as big as about 50 pounds with it. That will bend this Ugly Stik in half and it can take it. I have much more expensive graphite rods and when the fish get big the graphite rods snap like a dry twig. The additional fiberglass makes the Ugly Stik a little heavier but it is also makes it as durable as it is.

That is equipment that is not very expensive yet will last most probably the rest of you life.

Which size to choose?

Details:
I am wondering which is the best option to pair with a 6'6 M or ML rod? The 4730 or 4735? I will be targeting smallmouth bass, walleye and possible northern pike.

I paired a 4740 with a 7' ML for the type of fishing you describe. They balance nicely. If you use a 6'6 M rod you could go
with the larger reel for better control with larger fish like Northern. The 4730 with the ML rod would work for walleye & smallmouth. Go with what feels the best
in your hand, keeping in mind the type of fishing your doing. If you expect to connect with a larger fish you want to be able to control it. One of my best catches is a 20lb Northern on 12# test for example.

I used the 4735 on a 7' medium action Ugly Stick for a Canadian trip for smallmouth and walleye. It has a very nice balance.

I have the 4735 with a M 6'6" rod, and it would be a good rig for smallmouth, walleye, and pike. I would think the 4730 would be too light for that purpose.

you could go the first one 4730 with the ml
and 4735 for 66m
just to match up best but if these walleye and smallies and so on are gonna be pretty big you may want a bigger deal all together all depending on what you feel i mean i just caught a 7 lber on a 5'6" light pflueger gx7 combo with 4poundtest

you have the wrong pole for those type of fish you need a 6.6 medium or medium heavy .
on the pole it will say what the pole is rated for and match that up with the line on the reels.

The ligtest braid possible would be best. Braid is better on a casting reel as most spinning reel applications don't reqire braided line.

A:
Yes, I have Braid on my spare spool for deep trolling and flipping jigs into heavy cover. No worries

I wouldn't plan on anything over a couple of pounds with this setup. Anything bigger than that and you are going to need a longer stiffer rod and it won't be nearly as much fun.

A:
In order to reverse it, you have to crank the handle backwards to unscrew it, then do the same for the cap on the reverse side, turn it counter clockwise to unscrew it and replace it on the other side. Then thread the handle in on the opposite side in a cranking forward method to tighten it up. It's made to tighten as it reels so it does not unscrew on you during use.
